Painted Wine Bottle

Make sure you save your wine bottles and corks.  This is a beginner project and we will paint the labels on wine bottles to hold decorative herbed vinegars.

Cost will be $2.00 to cover some of the paints and you bring your own wine bottle, painting supplies, masking tape and paper towels.

You will need to tape off your bottle 6 inches from the bottom of the bottle and tape a paper towel over the neck of the bottle so no spray gets above the taped off line.  We will spray them as soon as you get to the church and they can dry during the meeting since they need 1-hour dry time.

I only have 2 people paid for the class and have had several people tell me they won’t make it to the class.  I have to purchase supplies so I would like to have some idea of how many people will actually be there since the sign up sheet is huge.  If you  are planning on being there please E-mail me or call me before Sept 23rd.  I know this is our membership meeting and bring a friend to paint day, so if you plan on bringing a guest please let me know that as well.  We love new painting guests!!!

Further in this newsletter are a number of recipes for your enjoyment and gift giving in the painted bottles!!

Dear  HOMDA Friends, As the leaves start turning around the edges, it reminds us that is time to renew our memberships—both to national and to our own society.  Unlike national, our dues haven’t changed in many years—a true bargain!  I know of nowhere else one could get so much learning, fun, fellowship for $12!  WOW! This meeting would be an excellent opportunity to bring a guest—remember, they are welcome to visit before they are required to join.  Sandy has been bringing a young neighbor interested in painting—are you only looking for members in your own age group?  Widen your horizons!  Decorative Painting will only grow if we share it with the next generation. Don’t miss signing up for the Christmas Party and the Carruth trip at the meeting-both are such great ways to get to know our members. My heart is so full of gratitude for those of you who painted cards for soldiers.  Ever since my son and now my granddaughter’s husband have been in the military I have had such a heart for the sacrifices these young men (and women) make on our behalf.  An afternoon painting seems like such a small thing to let them know how much we appreciate all they do for us… My apologies in advance for being absent for the meeting.  I am fulfilling a long-held dream and am going to Delaware to paint for five days with Ros Stallcup (Gran’s Gardens series) on my way to the Boston Area for the New England Traditions Convention.  Chris Keppel has agreed to be my partner in crime so if we come back full of “garden ideas”, please forgive us. Do yourself a favor and gather up a bunch of leaves and study the play of colors…God is really terrific with the fall palette!  Happy fall…y’all     Becky                                                Meeting minutes August 20, 2011 Becky Hilbert called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m.Member present: Ann Stevens, Sandy Young, Shelly Nelson, Rachel Smith, Dorothy Cutler, Sue Nemeth, Kimberly Raycraft, Chris Keppel, Dorothy Jorgensen, Julie Tews, Shirley Watson, Becky Hilbert,  Jo  Ann Smith, Nancy Jenks, Jill Leach.Minutes from last meeting accepted as written.Treasurer’s Report – Becky Hilbert reported a balance of $5,160.84.Programs – Sandy Young will teach after the October meeting. About Flavored Vinegars

Flavored Vinegar recipes are easy & perfect for gift giving! If your looking for a quick and easy way to come up with a Housewarming, hostess or thinking-of-you gift, then think about making your own home made flavored oil or vinegars, and give that as your gift.

Home made gifts are treasured a lot more than any kind of bought gift because it comes from the heart.

They not only look good in the kitchen but they taste great too!

Flavored vinegars add an extra kick to marinades, sauces, and dressings.  If you are looking for an elegant and thoughtful gift to make for Christmas, try these savory blends that we have collected because they are sure to enhance any meal.  If you grow your own herbs, this is a great way to use up any excess before the growing season is over.

Use flavorings such as sprigs of fresh herbs, peppercorns, fresh chiles and cloves of garlic. Use a vinegar such as white or red wine, cider, champagne, sherry or rice-wine vinegar. Use a chopstick or skewer to poke desired flavorings into a sterilized bottle. Experiment with different combinations and amounts. Add vinegar to fill, using a funnel. Cork or seal bottles and store in a cool, dry place for at least a week to allow flavors to blend. Flavors will mingle and become stronger as time goes by.

Store at room temperature. Keep covered and refrigerated. Shake before using.

Basil, Garlic, and Chive Vinegar

Ingredients

  • 1 cup basil
  • 1/2 cup chives (or 6 chive blossoms)
  • 2 garlic cloves, smashed
  • 2 cups red wine vinegar

Preparation

  • 1. Gather herbs in the morning, after the dew has dried. Wash, remove excess moisture in a salad spinner, and pat dry with a clean kitchen towel. Bruise or crumple herbs to release maximum flavor.
  • 2. Fill dry, sterilized jars with desired herbs and seasonings. (A quick run through the dishwasher sterilizes jars—just be sure to dry with the heat cycle on. Plastic lids are top-rack safe.)
  • 3. Heat vinegar in a nonaluminum saucepan over medium heat 10 minutes or just until bubbles appear (do not boil); remove from heat, and pour into prepared jars, making sure herbs are totally submerged. Cool completely (about two hours). Cover and chill one week. (The longer the herbs and vinegar stand, the more intense the flavor.)
  • 4. Line a fine wire-mesh strainer with a paper coffee filter. Pour vinegar mixture through strainer into a large measuring cup, discarding herbs and seasonings.
  • 5. Fill dry, sterilized glass bottles with fresh herb sprigs, if desired, and add strained vinegar. Tightly seal the bottles with nonmetallic lids or corks; store in the refrigerator up to one month.
  • Helpful Hints: To make your own herb vinegars, you'll need about 1 cup of fresh herbs for every 2 cups of vinegar. White wine vinegar pairs well with almost any herb; red wine vinegar is best with stronger herbs such as rosemary and oregano. Rice wine vinegar is a great match for delicately flavored herbs and flowers such as chive blossoms. Don't use distilled vinegar—it's a natural for household cleaning, but the harsh acidity overpowers the flavor of herbs. Quart-size canning jars with plastic storage caps make the best containers for steeping flavored vinegars. If you use metal lids, place plastic wrap over the top of the jar before adding the lid to prevent the vinegar from turning dark.
VINEGAR BASE1 small bunch of parsley1 teaspoon of peppercorns1/8 teaspoon of salt1 clove of garlic, peeled1 quart of your choice of vinegar: cider, white distilled, ricewine, white wine, or red wine Place the parsley, garlic, salt and pepper in a 2 quart ceramic or glass bowl. Bring the vinegar to a boil.  Pour the vinegar over the herbal mixture in the bowl. Cover and let the mixture stand for two days.  Strain the mixture and decant into a sterilized bottle.  Add one to three sprigs of the herbs of your choice.  Seal the bottle with a cork or lid. Let stand for two more weeks before using. FLAVOR COMBINATIONSTarragon and lemon in white wine vinegarChives, basil, and parsley in white wine vinegar Oregano, rosemary and thyme in red wine vinegar Lemon and dill in cider vinegar Garlic, chives blossoms and chervil in red wine vinegar Cilantro, jalapeño pepper and lime in white distilled vinegar (this one is hot) Lavender blossoms in cider vinegar Ginger root and cilantro in rice wine vinegar. OILS1 teaspoon peppercorns8 to 10 sprigs of your choice of herbsOlive oil to fill the container you are using1 sterile bottle or wide mouth canning jar Place the herbs and peppercorns into the sterile bottle or wide mouth canning jar.  Use a funnel to decant the olive oil into the  bottle to cover the herbs.  Seal and let stand for one month before using. Flavor CombinationsLemon and dillTarragon and chiveLemon and garlic (one of our favorites)Garlic, onion, and basilBasil and garlicCilantro and LimeRosemary and MarjoramGarlic, onion, oregano and red bell pepper Note: When using large pieces of fruit or vegetables, cut them into small wedges or pieces to fit into the bottle.  Use bamboo skewers to hold the pieces together in the bottle. Use herb vinegar in salad dressings, marinades, or to deglaze pans. Basil, Lemon, Chive Vinegar1 cup white wine vinegar3 large strips of lemon zest 3-4 whole leaves fresh basil10 stalks fresh chives --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Basil Peppercorn Vinegar1 cup white wine vinegar4-5 leaves fresh basil1/2 to 1 tsp. whole black peppercorns3-4 whole peeled garlic cloves --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dill Peppercorn Vinegar1 cup red wine vinegar4 sprigs fresh dill1/2 to 1 tsp. whole black peppercorns --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Garlic Green Onion Vinegar1 cup red or white wine vinegar4-5 peeled whole garlic cloves2-3 stalks green onions --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Rosemary Garlic Vinegar1 cup red or white wine vinegar4-5 peeled whole garlic cloves4 sprigs fresh rosemary --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Spicy Chile Pepper Vinegar 1 cup red or white wine vinegar1 or 2 whole jalapeño peppers --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Use the following ingredients in any combination you see fit. Garlic, green onion, chives, basil, rosemary, fresh mint, fresh oregano, fresh cilantro, whole peppercorns, lemon zest, lime zest, orange zest, chile peppers, fresh tarragon, bay leaves  The process is simple. Cut your ingredients to a size that will be completely submerged in the liquid. Put ingredients into clean bottles and pour red or white wine vinegar over them. Cap the bottles and store in a cool, dark place for at least three weeks. If you don't have that much time, you can speed the process up somewhat by heating the vinegar till it's lukewarm and pouring it over ingredients that have been chopped or crushed. Store this in a cool dry place for at least ten days, then strain and discard the chopped or crushed ingredients from the vinegar. Return the vinegar to a cleaned bottle and add new "whole" ingredients  FLAVORED VINEGAR RECIPES BELOW BLUEBERRY VINEGAR1 1/2 cups white wine vinegar1/2 cup canned blueberries plus   1/4 cup blueberry syrup from can Pour into a fancy bottle with an airtight seal. You may have to individually spoon in the berries depending on the size of the bottle opening. FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Happy Summer!

Anyone who’d like to join in a contest of seeing who can:

a)                 hold the longest handstand

b)                 have the prettiest handstand

c)                  have the most dazzle in their handstand  or

d)                 stand the longest on their head without hands

All under water, of course….guess what?!!!  It’s Grandma Camp this week!  I am so blessed.

Back to HOMDA…After the August meeting—in August 25, on Thursday afternoon and/or evening ( 1:00 or 6:00)—bring a sack lunch and stay through if you’d like—we’ll paint letters for soldiers.

September 9th is the Annual Faux Sleepover at my home—bring a snack, something to paint and be prepared for a fun evening of HOMDA fellowship.

Just a word about Lynne Andrews, I have been privileged to study with her several times.  She is self taught—has developed her own style of shading which is very soft and lovely which is usually accented with inking.  She is one of the hottest new artists in the field—if you haven’t signed up for her coming seminar---don’t miss out, we are so lucky to have her here, she lives in Rhode Island.  She is funny, easy to follow---you’ll need the brush she recommends.  Because part of this seminar is on Sunday, we need to change the venue—we will be in Downtown Dansville---just a “heads-up”.

Prayers to Kim’s mom who broke her hip Aug.1 and to Kim as her care will be changing drastically.

Hope to see you all the 20th if not at HOOT,  hearts,  rah

FUN RAFFLE PLANNED FOR AUGUST - FROM WAYS AND MEANS

Thanks to all who participated in the June raffle by donating items and/or purchasing tickets.  Because of your generosity, we raised $71.00.
For the August meeting we are trying a “re-purposing raffle.”  For this special event we are asking  you to donate items that may be re-purposed by painting or items that you have already re-purposed.   Some possibilities for donations might be old suitcases with fairly smooth surfaces,  metal items such as old coffee pots, wooden items, fabric items, etc..  In other words, “if it doesn’t move, paint it”, would apply in your search for items for this raffle.
Please remember to bring your brush worthy items to the August meeting.

EDUCATION

Hi ladies- we still have room in both the Lynne Andrews classes. If you have never taken from Lynne now is your chance. She is a wonderful teacher and is looking forward to teaching our chapter. Saturday September 17th and Sunday the 18th. Woodland Friends on Saturday, a 14" wooden plate with a snowman and all his friends and Sunday, Christmas Wishes- a wooden mitten with a snowman and crows. Both projects can been seen in full color on our website, or on the Education board at the meeting. Cost is 45.00 each day for members and 55.00 for non-members- cost of surface is 20.00 for the plate and 5.00 for the mitten. You may paint these on any surface you wish.

Pattern and prep packets will be available at the August meeting. We will NOT have a prep night for this project, not that hard. Shirley Watson must have your wood order and money paid in full for that wood by August 20th. No money, no wood ordered.

We would also like both the classes paid in full by that date,(at the meeting )it is way too hard to collect money the day of class, so if  you are not going to be at the meeting please get it in the mail to either one of us. A special email will be sent out to everyone signed up with more details later.

Make sure you save your wine bottles and corks.  This is a beginner project and we will paint the labels on wine bottles to hold decorative herbed vinegars.  There will be a recipe included or you can bring your own favorite with you to share with everyone.

Cost will be $2.00 to cover some of the paints and you bring your own wine bottle, painting supplies, masking tape, paper towels and normal painting supplies.  I will send a bit of prep instructions later in the year.

MEMORY BOXES

We have made the commitment to continue painting memory boxes for Ingham Medical. I will have unpainted boxes at the August meeting for pickup, including the two smallest sizes which were not desired in the past, but they are now. We will not be painting them at a HOMDA meeting this year so I am counting on members to do this on their own. If you will not be at the August meeting call me and I will get some to you.
